Many of our nations native fish populations are declining or are
at historically low levels. This problem is evident in the growing
list of threatened and endangered fish. Over 100 different types
of fish are fighting for survival in the United States.
The Senate and House of Representatives of the United
States of America in Congress legislated through the Magnus-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act, and amended under the
Sustainable
Fisheries Act, to reverse this trend by restoring and maintaining
the health of the Nations fishery resources. The amendments
and changes to the Magnuson Act include numerous provisions requiring
science, management and conservation action by the National Marine
Fisheries Service (NMFS).
The goal of this site is to advance scientific knowledge
via an Industrial Association between Moss Landing Marine Laboratories
and Fugro Pelagos, and provide improved methods and standards for
benthic habitat mapping in order that fisheries resources may be
better managed.
